Background: Did you know that 65% of the world's population is actually single on Valentine's Day? It's okay if you didn't because we just made that up. Being single on the day of love probably feels mad uncomfortable, but think about all the money & time you save up. And if you're still bummed about the single life, you can always hang out with the friend we can always count on: the darkness.

In October 1964, Simon and Garfunkel released the song “The Sound of Silence” as a track on their debut studio album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. which features the opening line: “hello darkness, my old friend.”

The first use of the song as a meme came in the form of background music. On July 8th, 2014, YouTuber Joe Bell uploaded a clip of the Sad Brazilian Fan with the song playing in the background. On July 30th, YouTuber convulsion0inc uploaded footage of electronic dance music producer David Guetta performing at the Tomorrowland and playing the song during a EDM drop.

The popularity of these videos paid off and gave rise to the /r/TheSoundofSilence subreddit on February 7, 2015. The meme experienced a rebirth on March 24th 2016 when Yahoo! News published a video interview with the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice lead actors Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, in which they were asked how they felt about the negative reviews of the film while Affleck remained seated in silence looking sad, very sad #SadAffleck.
