Background: Birthdays are good in the sense that they're predictable and come yearly. However, that predictability could cause the birthday boy or girl to expect gifts, praise, and a 24 hour taste of power. Sometimes this routine needs to be interrupted and a true surprise presented to keep the recipient on their toes. This is where the Circle Game comes in.

The Circle Game is a game of peripheral vision, trickery and motor skills. The game starts out when the Offensive Player creates a circle with their thumb and forefinger somewhere below their waist. The goal is to trick another person into looking at his hand. If the victim looks at the hand, he has lost the game, and is subsequently hit on the bicep with a closed fist, by the offensive player. Online, people have begun hiding hands making the circle symbols in various images to trick people into finding it.

The Circle Game was invented by Ohio resident Matt Nelson in the early 1980s while in elementary school as a a way to punch his friends. The game gained mainstream attention on November 15th, 2000 when it appeared on the television sitcom Malcom in the Middle.

The game eventually made its way online during the 2010s being referenced in various memes.

Give the birthday boy or girl the surprise of their lives with this unexpected forefinger and thumb combination known as The Circle Game. As seen in your favorite memes.
